Learning opportunities for Cambodian children to become digitally literate are still few and far between. Barriers to learning range from access to computers (yet alone internet connectivity), to prohibitive pricing of the limited after-school classes in technology. One barrier to global learning is that the majority of programming languages are based on a Latin alphabet, but for aspiring Khmer students, we have some great news… the first version of the free, block-based coding language - Scratch - is now available in Khmer!! We wanted to share the great news and a little bit of how this came to life. Read more here.
Celebrating the first clowder of Coding Cats!
It’s all cheers, celebrations, and coding at Raintree, where 100 students gathered for the inaugural Coding Cats graduation and project showcase. This marks the completion of their 5-week creative coding course powered by Saturday Kids, that aspires to enable the next generation of curious, resourceful and self-motivated learners. We wanted to share a little more of their journey, and what the future holds.

5 everyday objects transformed into design wonders
Although one might not imagine it today, Phnom Penh once heralded the "little Paris of Asia" was an architectural golden child of the 1950s and 60s. Cambodia more widely, was known as a country with rich and diverse architecture since the mid 20th century, with several institutional and iconic buildings constructed during the French colonial era across many provinces in the nation. One of the most notable and celebrated Khmer architects - Vann Molyvann - was particularly prolific in the 60s, many of whose projects can be found in Phnom Penh. What may be surprising, is the inspiration for many of these buildings borne from Khmer objects found in everyday life.
Kingdom of Wonderwomen
Although every day is women's day at Raintree, this month is International Women's Day. At a time where gender and power are increasingly at the forefront of people’s minds, less than 5% of Fortune 500 companies had female CEOs in 2018. We review how we are engaging in gender and diversity this March, along with highlights from some of friends of Raintree who are doing fantastic work and organising events not to be missed.
Coding Party @ the Canopy
As part of Raintree’s mission to enable capacity-building and education programs in Cambodia, we are so excited to announce a brand new program launching in April this year. In partnership with the fantastic Saturday Kids from Singapore, Coding Cats is a 5-week program for students aged 15-18 years old, with a playful curriculum based on Scratch, a block-based visual coding language. Generously supported by USAID’s Development Innovations, we are looking for people passionate about technology and education to become trainers, with the opportunity to be trained in the flagship Saturday Kids pedagogy and a chance to visit their campus. Introducing **Christmas @ Raintree v2.0**
Christmas @ Raintree is back for an even bigger second edition after the blast we had last year! We often get asked why we have this event, and why we even celebrate Christmas at all? Although Team Raintree likes any excuse to party, there is a real reason. Raintree aspires to build a creative, collaborative professional community - that means we work and play together. It’s the one time of the year where we bring together absolutely everyone from our wider community - partners, tenants, friends and family (including the kids!).
