Design Dialogue ft. The Gentry Hub

  • Phnom Penh Cambodia (map)

Join prominent voices in architecture for an opportunity to participate in a thought-provoking discussion on community-based participatory architecture.

This discussion is dedicated to exploring lesser-seen projects by local and international architects—alongside students. Through case studies spanning religious spaces, schools, community centres, and hospitality venues, we’ll delve into the real-world challenges of designing with and for local communities. Expect a deep dive into innovative materials, climate-responsive design, and the crucial role of local stakeholders. Our panel of architects, designers, and community members will unpack the intricacies of design, construction, and funding, offering new insights into the collaborative processes driving sustainable, vernacular inspired architecture.

The discussion will be moderated by Pen Sereypagna, director of New Khmer - Architecture (NK-A) and the Vann Molyvann Project. Co-author of Genealogy of Bassac (UR Terreform, 2021)—recipient of the 2019 Graham Publication Award—he is currently a PhD candidate in Architecture and Urbanism at the University of Hong Kong. His research on Phnom Penh’s urban form and Cambodian modernist architecture has been showcased in exhibitions and presentations across Cambodia, Taiwan, Australia, the United States, and Southeast Asia.

This dialogue is part of the Modern Architecture: Echoes + Reflections exhibition, a major exhibition dedicated to exploring the rich heritage and lasting impact of the New Khmer Architecture movement. Presented by Raintree in collaboration with the Vann Molyvann Project and NK-A. Click here to learn more about the exhibition. >>> Modern Architecture: Echoes + Reflections
