The arts have the power to spark meaningful dialogue and inspire action in our ever-evolving world. Imagine the incredible creations young people could produce if they led arts events.
The Cambodian Living Arts (CLA) is hosting a groundbreaking symposium, “Civic Participation through the Arts,” where they will unveil findings from a four-year study. This research, the largest art audience study in Cambodia to date, was led by Dr. Amanda Rogers of Swansea University, UK. The study explores how art influences civic engagement by examining the perspectives of artists, audiences, and young people on the connection between art and society. It includes an analysis of performances, artist interviews, and a youth festival organised by young individuals with limited arts experience. Aiming to bridge the divide between the public and arts organisations, the symposium will showcase how the integration of the arts can strengthen initiatives and contribute to societal progress.
Following this presentation, there will be a panel discussion and insights shared by program participants. Moderated by Lim Solinn, and joined by Kim Hak, CLA’s Springboard Grantee, Chhit Chanpireak, Executive Director from Lakhon Komnit and CLA’s Thrive Grantee, and Say Tola, Research Associate of Civic Participation through the Arts, the panel explores how artistic expression empowers individuals.
By attending these sessions, you will gain insights into how the arts can cultivate vital civic skills such as negotiation, leadership, listening, and effective communication. These discussions will illustrate how the development of these skills through artistic activities can enhance civic engagement.
